Tim and Alethea Stone’s home in North Routt County is the epitome of those imaginings. Tim Stone was a young architect and a bachelor when he relocated to Steamboat Springs from the Roaring Fork Valley. The Aspen market was prohibitive, but purchasing property in Steamboat was feasible and in 2003, Stone bought a lot in the woods near Steamboat Lake.

A recent pair of 500-inch winters doesn’t trump the reality of climate change. Scientists predict the Rockies are ultimately headed for warmer temperatures, smaller snowpacks, earlier melt-off and corresponding drought, wildfires and water shortages – let alone consequences for the traditional ski season.

Stories in the Steamboat Pilot during the 1920s hailed one gushing gas well in the ToCreek anticline between Steamboat Springs and Hayden “a wonder.” Now, Australian oil and gas developer Comet Ridge Limited is actively rediscovering, and re-drilling, for Routt County oil.
