Steamboat’s bears are about to become famous: “Oops, I Slid,” a diptych featuring a bear cub practicing his climbing skills, by local artist Marion Kahn, was selected by HMVC Gallery NY to appear on the Times Square Jumbotron for the month of February.

The painting will also be featured in Marion’s show, “Bear Talk,” at Rumor Design + Redesign this month in Steamboat Springs. Once Marion came up with the theme for the show, she says, the bears started to appear. “That’s when the fun started. Those bears needed, and wanted, to be in the artwork.”

The show features several bear paintings including “What Claw Marks?!” in which a black bear cub has climbed high into an aspen tree. Another, “Crossing with Triplets,” features a mother bear leading her three cubs while one explores a floating balloon.

Marion is a master colorist who is sought out by collectors for her use of color. “I like combining abstract and representational,” she says. And it’s not her first time in Times Square either: Her painting, “Cowboy Dream,” of a rodeo bronco rider against an abstract background, sold after being featured on the same Jumbotron in the summer of 2024.

If you’re not in New York City, stop by Rumor Design + Redesign this month to see “Oops, I Slid” and other pieces in the “Bear Talk” show.
