Building Worlds in Miniature

02/04/2026 10:58AM ● By Skylar Leeson
"Lone Ranger," Ryan Scheer.

Ryan Scheer didn’t set out to become a miniature world builder. Four years ago, he realized that the photographic style he was pursuing was perfectly suited to the micro scale. That realization led him to begin constructing detailed dioramas – small, handcrafted worlds that he photographs and prints – merging sculpture, photography and narrative into a single image.

Now on his 10th print, Ryan’s work remains deeply rooted in Western imagery. “They’re all western inspired,” he says. “It’s kind of an homage to Steamboat from when I was growing up as a kid.” The landscapes and quiet tension within his scenes reflect the ranching culture and open spaces that shaped his early years.

Materials are integral to Ryan’s process. He uses objects sourced from his family’s ranch, along with scavenged and synthetic materials, to build each environment. The piece featured here – and debuting for the first time at The Westerly during February's First Friday ArtWalk – represents a lone ranger figure set within a carefully constructed diorama made entirely of synthetic elements. “I got some stuff from my friend’s dumpster and built this world and placed the lone ranger in there,” Ryan explains.

This new work also marks a first in format for the artist. It is his first panoramic print, a choice that amplifies the sense of scale and gives the image a distinctly cinematic quality. Despite the miniature nature of the set, the final photograph feels expansive, immersive and narrative-driven.

With this debut piece, Ryan continues to blur the lines between photography and sculpture, transforming reclaimed materials into scenes that echo memory, isolation and the mythology of the American West. The result is a world built by hand, captured through the lens and presented as a quiet but powerful visual story.

The piece will be on view at The Westerly beginning Thursday, Feb. 5. It will remain on display until it sells.
