When Amy and Mark Satkiewicz returned to Steamboat Springs in 2017 after a stint working in California, they found more than just a home with a new-build property in Barn Village. Amy and the couple’s teenage daughters, Olivia and Mia, would come to view the house as a sanctuary.

In August 2020, Mark died suddenly from a cardiac arrest while riding his bike with friends on one of his cherished rides in the Yampa Valley. “Our front door became a revolving door of love, which has filled my heart during the last few years,” Amy says.

Mark may no longer be physically present, but his presence is felt among the personal artifacts that emanate his spirit dotted throughout the house.

The four-bed, 4 1/2 bath property was built by Grove Mountain as a spec home in 2017. Fortuitously, Amy and Mark were able to add their own last-minute influences as it was not complete upon the time of closing. “It was 90% done, so we could choose things like the quartz countertop in the kitchen and some of the finishes throughout,” Amy says.

The ground floor is the hub of the house with an open-plan kitchen, dining and living room. An oversized gas fireplace wrapped in a darkened stainless-steel finish on one wall doubles as a focal point of the space, and an inviting heat source on snowy winter days. Massive windows offer a connection to the neighborhood–friendly waves from passersby are a frequent occurrence.

A door off the kitchen opens onto a secluded fenced-in patio – a favorite sunny spot for al fresco morning coffees and a place to stretch the legs for energetic pups, George and Freyja.

Amy’s primary suite also occupies the ground floor, along with a powder room and laundry. The floor plan has the flexibility for living on one level, without a need to venture upstairs.

An open-plan loft area sits at the top of the stairs and offers a spot to sit and read, or a hang-out zone for teens. “My friends love being at our house,” says Mia, a senior at Steamboat Springs High School.

Three further ensuite bedrooms and a home office fill this floor, where light floods the whitewash-walled hallway. The simple backdrop, mirrored throughout the home, exhibits an ever-growing art collection started by Mark and Amy. Their preference for local works embodies their deep commitment to the community and enhances a sense of place.

Views of Mount Werner abound from an upper-level deck, where a hot tub is a magnet after outdoor workouts. A firepit on a patio below lures family and friends to soak up the alpenglow. “One of the reasons we liked Barn Village so much is the outdoor space and amenities,” Amy says. Residents have 4.3 acres of open space with trails to enjoy right out the door. A communal clubhouse with a swimming pool, hot tub, gym and event room area neighborhood hub.

“For me the home is the center of a family,” Amy says. When she first walked into the house she remembers being moved to tears. “I just knew this is where we had to be."
