Head Up North

Steamboat Springs, CO - Snow-blanketed ranchland, towering peaks, frozen lakes and more history than you can shake a ski pole at: North Routt County, or simply “North Routt” as it’s called locally, is a prime location for a winter day-trip.

Travel north on Elk River Road (County Road 129) and  follow the Elk River until you reach the town of Clark. Make sure to drop by the Clark Store, which served as a stagecoach station over a century ago, and is now home to a post office and a general store complete with ice cream, coffee, liquor and other goodies.

Continue on to the village of Hahns Peak, which was once a mining town but is now a hub of outdoor activities on Steamboat Lake and the surrounding backcountry. Pay a visit to Steamboat Lake Outpost for a quick bite, and consider opting to extend your stay in a nearby holiday cabin.

Outdoor winter sports are where North Routt really shines. Take a tour of the powder stashes of North Routt with Steamboat Snowmobile Tours or Thunderstruck Adventures. Steamboat Snowmobile Tours will help you explore a variety of areas in North Routt County, while Thunderstruck Tours take place on a private mountain bordering Pilot Knob. Both companies offer tours for any level of rider, from beginner to advanced, and offer shuttles from Steamboat Springs. For the more experienced riders, rent a sled through Rocky Mountain Sled Rentals and venture into the backcountry on your own.
