Niklas Malacinski, 18

Nordic Combined

Trained with Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club

What do you consider your proudest moment in your sport so far?

My podium finish in a Continental Cup in the beginning of the season in Park City, Utah. It was in the beginning of the season and it was a good reminder of the hard work that I do.

What do you most look forward to leading up to the Olympics?

Potential new experiences. And honestly, I enjoy the extra sense of pressure.

Watching the Olympics as youngster, what athlete inspired you the most?

Mostly the successful USA Nordic Combined athletes – Bill Demong, Johnny Spillane, Todd Lodwick – and other top athletes like Micheal Phelps.

What would it mean to you to qualify and compete in the Olympics?

It would mean everything. It has been a dream of mine to go to the 2022 Olympics since I held the medals of Spillane, Demong and Lodwick.

What’s it like having your older sister on the National Team with you?

It’s great to have someone so close in your life to travel with and compete with.

What's your go-to snack or meal before a competition?

I really like the Finnish bread-type dish called karjalanpiirakka. That, and oatmeal.

Best travel must-have?

Peanut butter is a must.

Anything else you want to share?

I have Finnish nationality.
