Since the sudden loss of Jesse Hamric last July, the Steamboat Springs community has wrapped his family in a blanket of unwavering love and support. For Jesse’s father, Jay Hamric, who is the principal at Steamboat Springs High School, the kindness shown to his wife, Heidi, and children, Jake and Izzy, has been both a comfort and a source of strength.

“People check in on us. They recognize that grieving comes in waves – some moments are really hard,” Jay says. “When you live in a community like Steamboat, you feel that presence. It’s not just words – it’s arms literally and figuratively wrapped around you.”

That presence, he says, gives grief a place to rest. It creates space for meaning, connection and healing. “The support has helped us find purpose again.”

Now, Jesse’s family is channeling that love into something lasting: the Live Big, Love Big Foundation, inspired by the way Jesse lived – with unshakable enthusiasm, joy and an infectious zest for life.

“The community gave to Jesse, gave him opportunities to chase his dreams and live life to the fullest,” Jay says. “He embodied a zeal for life – he found joy and brightness even in mundane moments. That’s what our kids got to experience. Now, we want to pass that on.”

The foundation is built on Jesse’s core values: positivity, inclusion and passion for life. One early idea is to host motivational speakers – people from all walks of life who’ve overcome challenges – to inspire others to pursue their potential. There are also hopes to honor Jesse’s love of snowboarding with community events during the winter season.

“Jesse was an incredible snowboarder,” Jay says. “He was hyped about everything – snowboarding, baseball, football. It was contagious. He uplifted everyone around him, not just because he was good, but because he genuinely loved the experience.”

At the heart of Jesse’s legacy is a message for young people: find joy in the moment. Compete with spirit, not just for the win. Celebrate others. And most importantly – include everyone.

“He didn’t care about the outcome as much as he cared about the experience. That’s what we want others to take away from his story” Jay says.

The foundation’s official launch will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 18 at Flying Diamond Ranch. Tickets are available now at livebiglovebigfoundation.org. The kick off celebration will host a community gathering to remember Jesse and support the mission ahead. As the family prepares for this next chapter, they invite others to grab a seat, get involved and carry Jesse’s light forward.
