From African Dance to American Pastime
Since African dance first came to the Yampa Valley 25 years ago, enthusiasm for it has grown tremendously. Top New York-based dancer Youssouf Koumbassa has performed here; local dancers have studied with him in Guinea, as the cross-cultural connection strengthens.
Meanwhile, baseball and softball thrive in Steamboat Springs, as Triple Crown players round the bases in the 'boat. Also on the sports scene, former NFL fullback and Under Armour exec Ryan Wood has turned his considerable energy to cattle ranching, changing the way American eats beef.
Read all about Ryan, Youssouf and more in the SummerFall 2010 edition of Steamboat Magazine, on newsstands now! Included in it is the official Steamboat Springs Visitors’ Guide, with comprehensive information on activities, lodging, outdoors, dining, weddings and reunions, shopping, services and realtors. Feature: Global Climate Change with a Local Twist by Jennie Lay
Small Steamboat efforts address the planet's big dilemma.
A recent pair of 500-inch winters doesn’t trump the reality of climate change. The Rockies are headed for warmer temperatures, smaller snowpacks, earlier melt-off and corresponding drought, wildfires and water shortages – let alone consequences for the traditional ski season. Scientists share a solid understanding of the underlying physics of climate change and an overwhelming certainty that it is underway.
