Steamboat Springs, CO - From high speed bike rides racing through fallen leaves to running on the frozen, snowy ground, Steamboat Springs is a town known for its endless outdoor activities and challenging athletics. Locals are no stranger to athleisure wear; women don durable leggings and men sport breathable button ups. There is something unusual, though, about leggings printed with a captivating abstract pattern, vivid colors and eye-catching designs. For those looking for comfortable athletic wear that simultaneously stands out and makes a statement, the recently launched Defiance Clothing Company offers just that.
Nancy Jeffrey, a resident of both Steamboat and Glenwood Springs, is the owner and artist behind Defiance Clothing Company’s striking designs. She has been experimenting with fabric and yardage for the past decade, but the development of digital media allowed her to expand the idea of a clothing company into reality. Nancy, utilizing her fine arts and interior design background, draws from her textile work, which she then transforms into a repeating, eclectic digital print. Those patterns are then transferred to the materials of her pieces.
In 1999, she changed scenery from the hustle and bustle of New York to the calm of the mountains. “The mountains mainly influenced my color pattern, shifting from dark shades to lighter colors,” Nancy says. “I’ve become obsessed with the color yellow since living in Colorado.”
Currently, the clothing is available online at the company’s website. And while Nancy’s designs aren’t in stores yet, several Steamboat locations – including W Gallery and Warehome Studios – are hosting events featuring her products.

Customers can wear her clothes for all occasions. “The pieces can easily be dressed up and accessorized for a special event,” she says. “Someone wearing my clothes should be able to walk out in their leggings from yoga class and slip on a pair of heels.”
