An eighteen-year resident of Steamboat Springs, Karen is the owner of Focus Adventures, a nationally recognized photo tour and workshop business. She leads an annual summer photo workshop in Steamboat Springs and photo tours to Ireland, Ecuador, Morocco and other international destinations. Karen believes that participating in a photo tour is about more than making great photographs. It's a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. “What the camera does best is reveal and reflect our worlds, which leads directly to the discovery of parts of ourselves,” says Schulman. "Photography offers us the opportunity to balance our thinking with feeling, our intellect with intuition, as we respond to the world through our images. It is a way of expressing ourselves artistically but with technical competence. The more we learn to ‘see’ with our mind, heart and spirit, the more of an adventure life becomes." Karen's stock and fine art photography appears in numerous publications and private art collections. Her fine art photography is regularly exhibited through the Steamboat Springs Arts Council and is sold locally through the Artisans’ Market and the Steamboat Art Museum. Karen is the co-author of Steamboat Visions, the first ever photographic book dedicated to northwest Colorado, which is currently out of print but can often be found at amazon.com or on ebay.
