3/18/06 - Studio Gallery 27 Hosts Live4 This
Excitement isn’t a word curator Susan Scheisser normally associates with an art exhibit… but that’s what’s happening at Studio Gallery 27. Now open is a contemporary art exhibit featuring an exciting mix of accomplished artists working in new mediums. First on the agenda is painter-turned-digital-artist, Shirley Sacks. Ms Sacks is a native of South Africa, living and working in Beverly Hills, California. Sacks has successfully propelled her art into cyber-space, while keeping her painterly sensibilities intact. A gradate of The University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Sacks has exhibited in South Africa and London, group shows at The Pink Gallery and Bergamont Station in Los Angeles and was invited to participate in The Santa Monica Museum’s annual Incognito exhibition in 2005. Her art adorns the walls of a multi-national array of art lovers. Her work titled “Almost a Dog” pokes high-color satire at the funky embodiment of love trapped inside the extra-terrestrial form of the pug. Not all fun and games, the majority of Sacks’ work embraces concepts of chaos through order and visa versa, addressing evolution, resolution, growth and positive energy. Dominating the main room with Ms Sacks are two young artists who comprise two-thirds of the staff at Live4This, a marketing and graphic design firm in Oklahoma. Darshan Phillips and Aaron Whisner, who practice a painter-slash-designer lifestyle, and are associated with Steamboat via the Ride Snowboards Graphic Arts Competition, co-hosted with ArtLink Steamboat. Darshan placed in ’04 and later won the coveted Best of Show at the 2005 competition, at the same time winning Honorable Mention for a different design submitted to a copycat contest at Salomon. Imagine that. Phillips and Whisner will exhibit paintings in an installation-style presentation at SG27 through the close of our ski season. Fresh work, cutting edge imagery and expression, prices sure incite young collectors. These talented artists represent contemporary style in a timeless way. Experimental in another direction, room2 is featuring a stunning display of artistic finesse and virtuosity by Steamboat resident and artist, Patricia Walsh. Walsh, who works in oil, acrylic, mixed media, charcoal, inks, oil monotype, and photography cg, has studied in Cuba with the Washington School to return armed with a new self-assuredness in her abilities. Combining her command of color with masterly technique, Walsh is using gouache to commit wonderful abstracted flower imagery to paper. Tricky, sticky and fast-drying, gouache is a heavy, opaque watercolor paint in the family of the age-old egg tempera medium, but with significant differences in the binder (egg emulsion versus gum-glue). Walsh has worked steadfastly on her technique and her results prove to be desirable and alluring. Pat’s new works hold fond remnants of the best characteristics of her earlier painting while exhibiting a loosening of control. Also showing in room2 is Reven Fellars. New to SG27, this sampling of Reven’s works in pastel is a precursor to show of New Original Works coming this October. Reven lives in Steamboat and Chicago.
