3.5 Feet Falls At Mid-Mtn and 4.1 Feet at the Summit In Past Nine Days Nearly 33.5 Feet of Champagne Powder Stacks Up At Ski Area This Season STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO—March 16, 2006—With spring less than four days away and two inches of fresh snow overnight, Steamboat’s cumulative snowfall for the 2005/2006 season surpassed the 400-inch mark at mid-mountain at 5a.m. this morning, making this the third snowiest year to date on record in the past 27 years. "The word about Steamboat's snow is spreading as fast as it is piling up in the Yampa Valley,” said Andy Wirth, vice president of sales & marketing. "This is one of those legendary seasons that you’ll hear about and read about for years to come. With more than 33 feet of snow this year, spring skiing in Steamboat will take on a whole new meaning this year.” This is the fifth time the resort has reached the 400-inch milestone since the 1979/1980 season and the first time since 1997/98. In addition to the current season, Steamboat has recorded 400+ winters during the 1983/84 season (447.5”), 1992/93 season (423.5”), 1996/97 season (460.25”) and the 1997/98 season (447.75”). With weather forecasts calling for additional snow this week and the resort closing on April 9th, the all-time snow record lies just in sight, only 60 inches more to top. As of 5a.m., March 16th, 2 inches has fallen overnight at mid-mountain and 3 inches at the summit in a 24-hour period and 8 inches at mid and 11 at the summit in the past 72-hours. In the past nine days, 43 inches (3.58 feet) has fallen at mid-mountain and 49.25 inches (4.10 feet) at the summit. Since the resort opened on November 23rd, snow has fallen 71 out of 114 days (62.3%) with 38 of those days recording four or more inches. The resort is currently reporting a 79-inch base at mid-mountain and 108-inch base at the summit with powder/packed powder conditions.
