Sidewalk Sale and Shopping Spree draw shoppers – Everyone loves a bargain! And the chance to win $1000 in the process is not a bad draw either. Thanks to all the participating Main Street members who made this event possible. Your donation of a mere $25 has made this one of the best promotions to date. With live music, kids’ games, a petting zoo, square dancing, horseshoes, craft vendors, and a Main Street sponsored food and beer booth, there should be something for everyone. The highlight of the event will be the Chuckwagon Chili Challenge, pitting some of the best chili makers in the county with new challengers. The entries are coming in for the red, green, and Firehouse (spicy) chili categories. There will also be a People’s Choice award voted on by those purchasing taster kits to try all the different entries. If you are interested in participating or learning more about being in the Chili Challenge, contact Tracy Barnett at 846-1800. Entry blanks are also available in the Downtowner newspaper around town wherever the Downtowner is on display. Main Street petitions City Council to establish downtown URA – At the board meeting on August 15th, the Board of Directors voted to submit a petition to City Council requesting the Council to look at an Urban Renewal Authority for the downtown area. With all of the development planned for the district, a URA would be able to capture the tax increment above a baseline which could be set later this year. A prerequisite to establishing a URA would be the requirement of a blight study in the downtown district. A URA would aid in the ability to get certain infrastructure (sidewalks, a possible parking structure, and defining entrances for the district, among other things) done in the downtown that could take the City many years to accomplish through the regular budget process. The Board will be looking at this proposal more closely at upcoming board meetings. In addition, the Board will be looking to establish a Business Improvement District as a means of raising funds to enhance services, do additional maintenance over and above what the City provides, additional promotions, and general operating expenses for the district. The timetable proposed for the BID is to get it on the ballot in the 2007 election. Main Street will be organizing educational meetings with property owners and tenants in the district to inform those involved. Small Business Financing seminar planned September 26– Looking to expand your operation? Want to do some façade improvements to your building? Could a line of credit be appropriate for your seasonal business? The Economic Restructuring Committee of Main Street is presenting a two hour crash course in financing options for those who have financial questions about their businesses. Representatives of several local banks, SBA, CHFA and others will be presenting valuable information Tuesday, September 26 – Centennial Hall – 1:30 – 3:30 PM. Please call Tracy, 846-1800, to pre-register. There is no fee, but we want to have enough materials for everyone. There will be no General Membership meeting in September. The Colorado Community Revitalization Association (the Colorado state Main Street organization) is having its annual conference in Greeley the last week of September. Mexican Independence Day Celebration – September 16th – Little Toots Park Farmers Market wraps up successful season – The final Farmers’ Market of the summer was held September 2. The market has more than doubled in size over the last year’s inaugural season. While the market could use more farm-type products, the overall reaction to the market has been most favorable. Main Street will be working hard over the winter to try to lure more farm products for next year’s market, although what we are finding is that with the proliferation of markets across the state, and most of them happening on Saturdays, it is difficult to lure those vendors to such a distant market. If you know of any producers who might be interested in our market, ask them to call Tracy for information. 846-1800
