3/15/06 - MARGI BRIGGS-CASSON SELECTED AS 2006 HAZIE WERNER AWARD RECIPIENT
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-March 15, 2006- The Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation’s 2006 Hazie Werner Award for Excellence will be presented to Margi Briggs-Casson during the 24th Annual Snowball event on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel & Condominiums. "I am honored to receive such a prestigious award,” Briggs-Casson said. "At the (Steamboat Springs) Middle School, with Grand Futures Prevention Coalition and Partners in Routt County, I have the opportunity to work side by side with people who passionately believe in the lives of kids in our community. My mission is to discover ways to devote more attention toward our youth through mentoring programs, so that they grow up learning healthy, lifelong habits.” After growing up in Illinois and majoring in elementary education, Briggs-Casson moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. At that time, President Lyndon B. Johnson instigated the Head Start Program, which opened up preschool education to the masses. Briggs-Casson found a teaching job during a shortage and thus began her lifelong dedication to children and education. Briggs-Casson worked as a kindergarten teacher in Denver before being transferred to Steamboat Springs in 1978 to teach preschool. Teaching reading and kindergarten at Soda Creek Elementary School, she formed a committee with co-chair Gayle Dudley in 1985 to design and construct the two playgrounds that stand today at Soda Creek Elementary School and Strawberry Park Elementary School. Briggs-Casson then earned a masters degree in social work from the University of Denver and used her teaching talents to help struggling students as the only school social worker for six schools in Craig and outlaying areas. In 1995, Briggs-Casson took her current job as counselor at Steamboat Springs Middle School, where she was recognized in 2005 as "Teacher of the Year.” She is involved in some way with virtually every youth serving program or advisory group in the county, including serving on the Partners in Routt County board of directors, working with Grand Futures Prevention Coalition as a community agent and a site supervisor for Partners’ Healthy Lifestyles Mentoring Program. "Through her work as a youth mentor, Margi has exemplified Hazie Werner’s remarkable dedication to the community,” said Chris Diamond, president of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. "Margi is an outstanding member of our community and is very deserving of this award.” The Hazie Werner Award for Excellence was established 18 years ago by the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation to pay tribute to a woman who has, through the pursuit of personal goals, achieved a standard of excellence in her field. Previous winners include: Skeeter Werner Walker, Katy Rodolph Wyatt, Eleanor Bliss, Carol Baily, Lucile Bogue, Criss Fetcher, Dorothy Wither (awarded posthumously), Sureva Towler, Rita Valentine (awarded posthumously), Geneva Taylor, Carol Schaffer, Gloria Gossard, Jayne Hill, Elaine Gay, Millie Beall, Arianthe Stettner and Wanda Redmond. Scheduled for Saturday, April 8, 2006, the semi-formal dinner and auction will be held at The Steamboat Grand Resort Hotel. Snowball tickets are available for $90 per person and $1,500 for Corporate Tables.
