Strings Music Festival Announces its 2009 Summer Season: "Con Spirito"

Steamboat Springs, CO: Strings Music Festival's 22nd season is aptly named "Con Spirito … A season of Spirited Music." New Music Directors Andrés Cárdenes and Monique Mead have infused the Wednesday and Saturday night classical series with spirits of ethnic flavors from around the world. Experience an invigorating performance of the "Horse Race" on the Chinese erhu, or the spirited "Four for Tango" from Latin composer Piazzolla performed by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano or perhaps an evening of multi-media with the Gryphon Trio presenting "And the masks evoke…" by Chinese composer Ka-Nin Chan. Additionally, Strings' Friday night series will present New Orleans funk, Texas blues, Canadian fiddles and the legendary hearts of country music. Opened in 2008, the Strings Music Pavilion and summer season will host more than 80 performances throughout the summer.

The opening night program on June 27 presents one of the most distinguished violinists in the world today, Elmar Oliveira. His program will range from the contemporary "Visions and Miracles" of composer Christopher Theofanidis to Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Additional classical season highlights include pianist Jon Kimura Parker, violinist Chee-Yun, the 2009 Gold Medalist in the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, and guitarist Jason Vieaux.

Music Directors Cárdenes and Mead have created a season of "fluid" programs filled with shorter pieces for Wednesday, 90 minutes concerts with no intermission and a meet and greet with musicians afterwards. These changes make Wednesday a great night to enjoy the classics in a casual way. Saturday classical programs remain the flagship performances of the festival with masterworks from the greats.

An energetic Different Tempo line-up on Fridays features two nights of the legendary funk band The Neville Brothers; Canada's first fiddling family Leahy; Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year Ruthie Foster; legendary country artist Chris Hillman; bluegrass sensation Cherryholmes and much more.

Strings Music Festival concluded its 2008 season in the award-winning new music Pavilion with numerous sold-out concerts.
