K. Saari Gallery
Please join us for a talk with local artist Laura Wait on February 25 at 6:00 pm.
Laura will be discussing her current solo show In Opposition at K. Saari Gallery.
The show features her large scale paintings, encaustics and wall sculptures from her new series.
As stated in her artist's statement," The physical presence of paint is essential to my art, focusing on encaustic and acrylic, each affording different
qualities and possibilities. I use encaustic to create dense ancient fresco like surfaces with layers of ink writing on
Japanese paper saturated with color, scraped to reveal an inner texture, or scratched with lines to make new imaginary figures or handwriting.
I use acrylics when I want to work large and fast, with big shapes and energy.
Transparency of layers and writing through thick paint are important elements in creating all of the rich surfaces I imagine."
Wait lives in Steamboat Springs and makes paintings, unique books, and prints. She holds a degree in Art History from Barnard College, Columbia University, NY as well as certificates in Printmaking and Bookbinding from Croydon College of Art, England, awarded in 1976 and 1981.
She exhibits her art widely, and her artist's books are in many private and public collections, including the Library of Congress. She teaches art workshops to book artists throughout the country including Penland School of Crafts and the San Antonio School of Art.
