1/30/09 - January Tops 100-inch Mark
STEAMBOAT RECORDS SECOND CONSECUTIVE 100-INCH MONTH OF CHAMPAGNE POWDER™ SNOW

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-January 29, 2009-Over a foot of new snow in the past 24-hours at the Steamboat Ski Area propelled the cumulative snow total for January to over 100 inches.  That makes two months in a row that Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® has surpassed the centennial milestone during the 2008/2009 season.

"Steamboat has some of the best snow in the Rocky Mountains, the largest mid-mountain base of the major Colorado destination resorts, and a summit base that’s edging towards the 90-inch mark," said Rob Perlman, vice president of sales & marketing for the resort. "Powderhounds couldn't be more delighted."

Steamboat is currently in a storm cycle that as of 5am this morning has yielded 4" (3.8 feet) at mid-mountain and 56" (4.7 feet) at summit in past 7 days; and 104" at mid-mountain and 124.5" at the summit for the month. The resort is reporting a 75-inch base at mid-mountain and 86-inch base at the summit with powder conditions.

Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A. received 100 inches of snow for two consecutive months (December & January) for the fourth time in resort history (2008/09, 2007/08, 1996/97 & 1981/82). Since 1979/1980, the resort has reached the 100-inch milestone seven times in December and eight times in January.

Since the resort opened on November 26th, snow has fallen 44 out of 67 days (66%) with 28 of those days recording four or more inches. So far this season at mid-mountain, Steamboat has seen 4.75" in October; 35.25" in November; 100" in December; and 10" in January for a combined total of 244" (20.3 feet). The National Weather Service is forecasting that orographic light snowfall will continue along the northern and central Colorado Mountains today before clearing skies return for the weekend.

"Steamboat’s Champagne Powder is legendary world-wide," said John Kohnke, resort patrol director. "However, deep snow conditions require extra caution. Always ski/ride with others and stay clear of tree wells and other natural and manmade obstacles on the mountain."
