| 7/28/06 - Strings presents celebrated songwriter Rodney Crowell |
| August 11, 2006
Steamboat Springs – It takes a special kind of songwriter to appeal to artists ranging from Andy Williams to the Grateful Dead. That’s just the type of breadth and depth that landed Houston native Rodney Crowell in the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. It won him an ASCAP lifetime achievement award and a Grammy Award too. And more than three decades into his auspicious songwriting career, New York Observer calls Rodney Crowell “…one of the great singer-songwriters in country, in America.”
As an innovative, soulful songwriter, Crowell started young. Crowell ventured into the music scene as a boy, playing drums for his dad in a band he describes as a “particular blend of hardcore honky tonk, Texas swing and Appalachian folk music.” He started a rock band in high school, then dropped out of college to try songwriting in Nashville. Holed up in a Nashville pub, Crowell found himself struggling in the company of regulars like Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams and a slew of other talented performers. Emmylou Harris soon recorded two of Crowell’s early songs, after which he toured round the world with her band for many years.
Crowell has recorded eleven solo records that culminate in his personal favorite, “The Outsider,” last year’s cross-genre masterpiece that features Harris, John Prine and many other guest artists. Texas Music Magazine says that album “officially caps the hottest three-album streak in Texas music since Steve Earle’s triumphant Train A Comin’-through-El Corazon.” Billboard proclaims, “That Rodney Crowell has been on a creative roll of late is an understatement, and the third in a trilogy of introspective masterworks sees no decline in genius but an uptick in rockability.”
Rodney Crowell plays at the Strings in the Mountains Music Festival at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 2006, under the tent at Strings Music Festival Park. Tickets are $35 and are available at Strings in the Mountains (970-879-5056 x105, www.stringsinthemountains.com or the box office). Listen to Rodney Crowell at www.stringsinthemountains.com . “The modern embodiment of a cowboy poet, Crowell’s voice ranges from Southern sonnet to tumbleweed Texas rap, all imbued with the self-deprecating tone of an artist aware of his place in the universe.”—Boston Herald
