| Summer 2006
Steamboat Springs – Take a hike after work. Swim some laps. Bike to the top of Emerald Mountain. Then head over to Strings in the Mountains to cool off with some culturally minded friends. Strings’ “Contempo Concerts,” on July 5 and July 19, are tailored just for you – you in your bike shorts, your Tevas, your wet hair tossed back in a bun – and the relaxed social atmosphere you like best.
Young adults (age 21-39) are invited to enjoy cocktails, conversation and chamber music for only $10. Come as you are – and come early with friends for Strings Café happy hour discounts and a wine tasting. Strings is even hosting a 6 p.m. reception before each Contempo concert, just outside the tent with views toward Mount Werner, including cheese, crackers and an informal gathering of musicians and technical staff who are always thrilled to chat about their music. It’s where to be on two Wednesdays in July—and all Contempo Concert attendees are automatically entered into a drawing for two tickets the Strings Chamber Music Finale on August 12!
The Contempo Concert programs include:
&hibar; “Brahms to Brass” on July 5 features the Brahms Strings Sextet playing “String Sextet in B Flat,” one of the composer’s most popular pieces. The 14-piece Alpen Brass Ensemble will also perform their unusual version of “Romeo and Juliet Suite,” one of Prokofiev’s orchestra classics.
&hibar; “From Russia with Love” on July 19 shows off great Russian chamber music by Moszkowski, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich, including his most famous piece, “Piano Trio in E Minor.”
Have a chat with Strings
Put the classics in context. Strings in the Mountains offers audiences a casual opportunity to enrich their classical music experience with Pre-Concert Talks. This year, these educational and entertaining conversations directly precede chamber music concerts, delving into the evening’s musical program – leaving you a chance to pre-order dinner from Strings Café and enjoy it before the show.
Learn about the composers, what influenced them, and what made them tick. Glimpse into the time and place where a piece was written. Then listen for those memorable and inspired moments during the evening’s concert. Pre-Concert Talks are free and last about 45 minutes, with a break before the concert to ask questions over dinner or a glass of wine at Strings Café. The talks start July 5, and continue each Wednesday night (except the week July 26, when the talk moves to Saturday, July 29), through August 9.
Wine and dine with Strings
Make a full evening of your Strings in the Mountains concert by dining at Strings Café, where grilled items, salads, paninis and nightly dinner specials are served starting at 5:30 p.m., rain or shine, before each concert. Call ahead to reserve a table or bring your blanket and enjoy a Strings Café picnic in Strings Festival Park. Strings Cafe offers wine by the bottle or by the glass, beer and a full bar. To make a table reservation, call Moving Mountains Catering at 970-870-9359.
Strings Café is also hosting two wine tastings to coincide with the Contempo Concert series. Join a wine expert for $2 samples at a Pinot tasting on July 5, then a Chardonnay and Zinfandel tasting on July 19. Tasting notes are included, and Strings Café will offer special tapas snacking menus to accompany the wines.
Strings in the Mountains Contempo Concerts start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, and Wednesday, July 19, 2006, under the tent at Strings Music Festival Park. A free, casual reception precedes the concerts at 6 p.m. Tickets for Contempo Concerts are available at Strings in the Mountains (970-879-5056 x105, www.stringsinthemountains.com or the box office). All Pre-Concert talks are free and start at 5:30 p.m.
