| Ski Jump Dedication Invitation - The Colorado Ski Heritage Project, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Foundation and the City of Steamboat Springs will be hosting the dedication of the Steamboat Springs Year-Round Ski Jump Project on Saturday, July 1. A tour of the complex will be held at 3:15 PM with the ribbon cutting and exhibition at 4:30 PM at the Howelsen Hill Yampatheater (base of the jumps). Everyone is invited to share in the culmination of this long-awaited project.
Aviators In Town – Cessna 185/185 aircraft will be in town July 11-15 for their annual convention, with over 250 people in attendance. The Northwest Colorado Aviators group wants to use this opportunity to demonstrate the importance of the Steamboat Springs Airport to the local economy. In the next week the local Aviators group will be asking downtown merchants to contribute coupons for a discount or “freebie” which will be included in the welcome packets. They will also be encouraging the attendees to SPEND MONEY and let stores and restaurants know that they are here because of the airport. The group would also like the participating merchants to track the dollars spent by the “redeemers”. The Aviator Group would then like to make public the information in a newspaper ad, along with the names of those merchants and restaurants participating. There will be a limited number of merchants and restaurants being asked to participate so coupons WILL be used and only downtown merchants are being asked, as the group is staying at the Grand. The Aviator Group wants people to come downtown! This is a “high economic profile” group that is passionate about airports. If you would like to participate, call Cindy Maddox at 879-7881.
Promotion Committee Contacts CDOT - As you may be aware, people coming to Steamboat Springs from the East often become confused about where downtown is in relation to the Ski Area. Drivers will get as far as the Hilltop Connector and think they have missed downtown, so they turn around and head back toward the mountain. Last fall the Promotion Committee contacted CDOT and had a “2 miles” indicator added to the sign just before the Mt Werner turnoff coming from the East. Apparently this is not enough as merchants have still been told that people still are turning around at the Hilltop Connector. CDOT has again been contacted, asking this time for a Business District Ahead sign somewhere just before the Hilltop Connector. A CDOT representative was in town last Tuesday to check out the situation. We should be hearing from him shortly. If CDOT will not provide the sign, the Promotion committee will press CDOT to allow Main Street to put an attractive sign in the right-of-way to point people in the right direction.
Steamboat Classic Car Cruises – Steamboat residents and others in Northwest Colorado have MANY classic original and restored vehicles tucked away in their garages away from the admiring eyes of the auto-appreciation crowd. The Steamboat Car Club is encouraging anyone who would like to participate to join them on the third Friday of the next three months to join them at 6:00 PM at the Stockbridge Center. From there the vehicles will cruise through downtown, up to the mountain and Ski Time Square, returning for a Show and Shine opportunity for the public in front of the Courthouse about 6:30 – 7:00 PM. The cars will be on display for at least an hour. Whether you participate or spectate, don’t miss this fun opportunity.
General Membership Meeting Yields Ideas – On June 23, Frank Dolman of Baby’s Away came to the General Membership meeting armed with a list of 15 things he thought Steamboat might do to get people who pass through on their way to either Rocky Mountain National Park or Dinosaur National Park to stop and spend some time. It was his observation, while on a recent RV trip, that other towns let road travelers know, long in advance of their arrival, but while on the road, what to see and do in their communities. With plenty of windshield time, Frank noted that Steamboat does nothing like this, other than the FM Light’s signs to create anticipation of things to do in Steamboat. Other than just a pretty town, what would make people want to stop? Do they know we have an Alpine Slide? A year-round ski jump? A gondola for scenic rides? Hot Springs pools? We may have CDOT to deal with on these signage issues. Frank also feels that we do not do enough to encourage RV’s to stop and spend some time. Although there are a couple of RV parking signs close to the parking, we should try to let RV’s know, well in advance, that they are welcome: we have a shuttle to take them downtown from the Stockbridge and there are no parking time restrictions, where the RV dumps are, where WIFI is available, where to camp and perhaps initiate a 1610 AM info radio station with a three minute loop telling (all) people what there is to do in Steamboat. A representative of the Chamber was at the meeting as well, so we will be getting together to work on these ideas. Frank has a very fertile mind, as do many others. Any and all ideas for improving the downtown experience are WELCOME. If you think of something downtown should be doing (or at least looking in to), please call Tracy at 846-1800.
