3/13/06 - Resort is one inch away from 400/-inch snow mark
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO—March 13, 2006—Spring is just a week a way, yet winter doesn’t want to let up at the Steamboat Ski Area, where a series of storms has brought the resort over a foot of snow at mid-mountain and nearly two feet of snow at the summit in the past 24 hours. Steamboat is currently reporting an 86-inch base at mid-mountain and 115-inch base at the summit. "After about a week of Colorado bluebird sunny days early in March, Mother Nature has put us right back into full-on winter with mid-January conditions with lots of snow and cold temperatures,” said Doug Allen, vice president-operations of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. "With systems stacked up to our west, we anticipate a series of storms to remain active throughout the remainder of the week.” From 12:30 p.m. Sunday thru 12:30 p.m. today, 15 inches of snow was recorded at mid-mountain with 19 inches at the summit. At 12:30 p.m. Saturday, 2 inches was recorded at mid-mountain with 3 inches recorded at the summit, for a total of 17 inches and 22 inches respectively in the past 48 hours. In the past six days, the resort has accumulated more than three feet (36.5”) of Champagne Powder snow at mid-mountain and nearly four feet (45.5”) at the summit. Since the resort opened on November 23rd, snow has fallen 69 out of 111 days (62.1%) with 37 of the 69 days recording more than four inches. Over 33 feet (399 inches) of Champagne Powder has stacked up at mid-mountain since Oct. 4th. Forecasts are calling for snow throughout the upcoming weekend. "The word about Steamboat's snow is spreading as fast as it is piling up in the Yampa Valley,” said Andy Wirth, vice president of sales & marketing. "This is one of those seasons that you’ll hear about and read about for years to come. With more than 33 feet of snow this year, spring skiing in Steamboat will take on a whole new meaning this season.” The resort unveiled its www.bigsno.com site as a way to share the excitement of this season’s legendary Champagne Powder with skiers and riders who love big, deep snow and Ski Town, U.S.A.® This site continues to chronicle the epic snow Steamboat has received so far with images, video and statistics. Even with all the snow, getting to Steamboat has never been easier. American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United Airlines fly directly into Steamboat and are offering attractive fares this winter. The Steamboat/Hayden (HDN) Airport is just 22 miles/35kms from the ski area and even with more than 30 feet of snow annually, very few diversions are caused by weather.
