VALMALENCO, Italy (March 15) - U.S. Snowboarding picked up two podiums in the final World Cup of the season Saturday. Michelle Gorgone (formerly of Steamboat Springs) had a career best Saturday finishing second in the parallel giant slalom finale in Valmalenco. Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, CO) was third in men's.
"I'm just happy as I had a rough season. It seemed that it was getting worse since the Olympics," Gorgone said. "It's cool to get a good result at the end of the season. I hope I continue like this in the next one. It was kind of my day. My coaches said that I could do it and it just worked out.”
In the women's competition, Anke Karstens of Germany finished first and Claudia Riegler, who was third in the PGS snowboard World Cup standings, finished third.
In the men's heats, Reiter experienced a career high when he finished third. Matthew Morison of Canada won, followed by Roland Fischnaller of Italy in second.
In the final men's PGS standings, Tyler Jewell (Steamboat Springs, CO) led U.S. riders in ninth with 3,570 points. Reiter was 20th with 1,849, Adam Smith (Bend, OR) was 21st with 1,828, Chris Klug (Aspen, CO) was 25th at 1,116 points, and Zac Kay (Mount Shasta, CA) was 31st with 621 points.
