3/5/08 - William and Jan van Straaten of Steamboat Springs buy Carson Gallery
DENVER, February 28, 2008 — Sandy Carson announces the acquisition of the Carson
Gallery by William and Jan van Straaten of Steamboat Springs.
The van Straatens are owners of van Gallery, founded in Chicago in 1969, and print
publishing atelier, Riverhouse Editions, in Always located in or around
downtown Denver, the Carson Gallery has been in business for 33 years. In 2000 the
gallery moved to Santa Fe Drive where it presently resides.
Ms. Carson and her current staff will remain with the gallery, working in collaboration with the van Straatens to expand the mission of both organizations. By combining resources, they will mount exhibitions, sponsor lectures, and initiate gallery events. The Carson Group Art Consultants will remain active as well.
William van Straaten is a former president of the Chicago Dealers Association and a founding member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association. The van Straatens were honored in 2000 by Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for donating a large collection of Riverhouse prints to the Mary and Leigh Block Museum for hands on study of printmaking by students as well as the interested public.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Riverhouse workshop, which has published etchings and monotypes by such prominent artists as Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner, Lynda Benglis, John Walker, Louise Fishman and others. The van Straatens settled in Colorado after founding the print shop in 1988.
Both the van and Ms. Carson have strong commitments to art education, with ongoing involvement with artists at the University of Colorado and the art department and gallery at Denver University.
The first show by the combined galleries will be in the early fall, when the exhibition schedule commitments of Sandy Carson Gallery will be fulfilled.
