High Crimes March 8th, 7pm, SMT

In 2006, the late Sir Edmund Hillary spoke of the mountain whose summit he was the first to reach a half-century earlier. “I think the whole attitude towards climbing Mt. Everest has become rather horrifying,” he said. “People just want to get to the top.” His words could serve as the thesis of Michael Kodas’s absorbing and disturbing new book about the business of Everest, High Crimes: The Fate of Everest in an Age of Greed

High Crimes chronicles the 2004 Everest season and attempts to uncover how a 69-year-old doctor named Nils Antezana died on the mountain after being abandoned near the summit by his guide and Sherpas. The Everest described by Kodas is an extreme theme park, a sort of globalized Wild West populated by unscrupulous characters whose guiding principles are amateurism (in the bad sense), thievery, egotism, and deadly greed.

Vertical Ethiopia March 12th, 7pm, SMT

In March of 2007, four women traveled to northern Ethiopia to climb virgin sandstone towers in the Horn of Africa. Vertical Ethiopia is the narrative of their journey.

Listed by Frommers as one of the “Top 12 Travel Destinations for 2007,” Ethiopia is trying to excavate itself from a legacy of famine, drought, and communism. Vertical Ethiopia reveals the country at a turning point in its embrace of its natural heritage. Using climbing as a magnifying glass, Majka Burhardt comes to understand a land brimming with striking geological and cultural beauty. Gabe Rogel captures this process, and contextualizes it, through his photographs. Burhardt’s narrative reveals the challenges of climbing and ofEthiopia, and her and her team’s exploration become your own, as the red sandstone opens onto the endless African horizon.
