12/12/07 - Sophie Milman – “This year’s jazz gem”
It has been a three-year whirlwind for Sophie Milman. Her new album, Make Someone Happy, has been awarded “#2 Best Song of 2007” on iTunes and also the CD is listed as one of iTunes “Best Selling Jazz Albums of 2007.”

Barely 24 years old, Sophie Milman has already seen and done more than many people twice her age. Since her self-titled debut was released in 2004, it has sold almost 100,000 copies worldwide, hit the Billboard Top 5 in Canada and the Top 15 in the United States, and topped the iTunes jazz charts in five different territories. Meanwhile, Sophie has maintained a rigorous touring schedule – headlining sold-out shows in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Japan, and throughout Europe – and continued to balance her burgeoning music career with her commerce studies at the University of Toronto.

Sophie’s story continues to inspire. After emigrating from Russia to Israel with her family at the tender age of seven, then moving again at 16 to seek a new life in Canada, the transition from bookish teenager to glamorous jazz ingénue was perhaps unlikely. It was the offer of a recording contract after just three or four professional singing engagements that touched off a series of events that soon found this beautiful, multilingual talent gracing the cover of publications across the globe.

Before long, Sophie had earned a 2006 Juno Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album and was appearing on stage with international musical superstars like Aaron Neville and the Neville Brothers, Chick Corea, and Jesse Cook.

Defying her youth, Milman’s smoky voice has been compared to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald. The jazz legend was one of Milman’s many musical influences; her childhood in Israel was spent listening to a precious collection of vinyl jazz recordings that escaped Russia with her family.

Sophie Milman unveils her acclaimed smooth jazz vocals at the Strings Music Festival Holiday Gala Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort & Conference Center.
