The show will also feature the work of Emily Hall a New York based artist in the gallery's project room. There will be an opening reception for all the artists Friday, November 30, 6-8 pm. K. Saari Gallery will also host another opening reception on Friday, December 7, 6-8 pm, for the First Friday Artwalk.
Denver painter Rodney Wallace's new series Celluloid Heroes is based on the Kinks song of the same name. The neo- pop paintings are portraits of all of the stars mentioned in the song (Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, Bela Lugosi, Bette Davis, George Sanders, Mickey Rooney, Marilyn Monroe and Hollywood Boulevard itself).
The idea for Celluloid Heroes has been with Wallace for a long time. It was not until he was in Los Angeles for an opening of his in February and got to walk down Hollywood Boulevard that the whole series solidified in his head. "Music has always been one of my muses but never so literal. It is usually just playing at ear piercing levels in the background at my studio" says Wallace.
Rodney is experiencing a phenomenal year. Since January, his works have been on HGTV, MTV and WebTV. He has shown in 20 shows this year and is booked through 2008. Wallace is currently in negotiations with several museums around the globe for a project he has been working on for over four years. The project, called "Images in a Life" will be on exhibition from late 2008 to mid 2009 at five locations that will be announced this January.
Ron Johnson is an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and will be showing a combination of paintings and drawings. By loosely painting and drawing abstractly on long lengths of Mylar and then layering these sheets so the imagery is partly obscured by subsequent layers translates into a very sublime viewing experience. Johnson has been showing extensively in the past two years, with shows at the McLean Project for the Arts, McLean, VA; Maison d'art Actuel des Chartreux, Brussels, Belgium and Musee Beux Arts Amilly, France.
Brooklyn artist Emily Hall's Raising the Temp. consists of a series of drawings that explore the interior space of an apartment almost empty upon arrival. What does it take to make a place a home even if only for a short time? The drawings are made of hand painted paper, where color is explored to create signifiers and moods. The drawings together investigate shelter (interior/exterior), people (as individuals/couples/groups) and the passing of time.
