10/23/07 - “A Night on the Town” to Benefit the Endangered Black-footed Ferret

DENVER, CO – Prairie Wildlife Research, Defenders of Wildlife and Earth Friends Wildlife Foundation welcome the public to “A Night on the Town” to celebrate North America’s most endangered mammal, the black-footed ferret. This benefit event will take place at the Colorado History Museum (1300 Broadway, downtown Denver) on Tuesday, October 23 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will aid ongoing recovery efforts for the black-footed ferret.

Thomas D. Mangelsen, one of the most recognized wildlife photographers in the world, is this year’s guest speaker, and will present his new images of prairie wildlife as well as sign books at the event. Mangelsen’s images have appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, National Wildlife, Smithsonian and many other publications. Mangelsen received the North American Nature Photographer Association’s Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year 2000 award. His work has been displayed in natural history museums across the United States, Canada and Europe. His Images of Nature galleries (www.mangelsen.com) are located across the West, including Cherry Creek, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs and Denver Airport.

Guests will also be able to meet a live black-footed ferret and speak with black-footed ferret experts.

A variety of items will be available for line and silent auction, including several limited-edition Mangelsen prints, rare Mata Ortiz pottery, signed books and prints (including Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE items), ski packages at Steamboat Springs, a week for two at Lane Guest Ranch in Estes Park, an eco-tour for two tracking mountain gorillas in Rwanda, and a night on the South Dakota prairie observing wild black-footed ferrets (more details on these items at www.prairiewildlife.org). Free black-footed ferret posters, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a specialty drink, “The Ferretini” will also be available.

The re-emergence of the black-footed ferret, once believed to be extinct, is one of the most successful endangered species stories in America. The last wild population of black-footed ferrets was found in Wyoming in 1981. Today, they are being bred in captivity and reintroduced back into the wild at 12 locations.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 at the door, available on-line at www.prairiewildlife.org or by calling 970-217-7068. Pre-bids on auction items also may be made online or by phone for those who cannot attend.
